      <image:title>About - About me</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2021, I moved to Berlin to advocate for the communities I had worked alongside throughout my twenties and thirties: political prisoners, incarcerated people, people living with chronic and untreatable illnesses, and sex workers organizing for racial and gender equity. I am a PhD candidate at the Hertie School, supervised by Anita Gohdes and Claire Adida. My cumulative dissertation examines why migrant deaths are undercounted and how hidden population methods can produce better estimates. My first two papers use methods based on Multiple Systems Estimation to estimate the “true” number of migrant deaths along the Central Mediterranean, and the U.S.-Mexico border, respectively. This work grew out of my Master of Public Policy at the Hertie School (2024). My master’s thesis used Multiple Systems Estimation to estimate the number of migrants who died at the U.S. border between 2014 and 2017. I work primarily in R, and I do spatial analysis in R, QGIS, and ArcGIS Pro, which I first learned during a study abroad semester at UCLA. From 2022 to 2025, I worked with the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project, first as an intern and then as a staff member. The project collects and publishes global data on migrant deaths and disappearances. I focused on data collection and analysis in the United States and Europe using open-source investigative (OSINT) methods. I developed those skills as a volunteer in the founding cohort of the Hertie School Digital Verification Corps, part of Amnesty International’s Digital Verification Corps network. Before graduate school, I was Administrative Director of the Haymarket Pole Collective, a group of sex workers advocating for racial and gender equity. Earlier, I worked as a cannabis science writer and editor for publications including Broccoli Magazine and Project CBD. I also apprenticed as a shoemaker, which is different from a cobbler. Short Bio Zoe Sigman is a PhD candidate at the Hertie School whose research addresses the undercounting of migrant deaths, using Multiple Systems Estimation and other hidden population methods. They previously worked with IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, using open-source investigative methods to improve data on migrant deaths globally. They hold a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School, and their background includes harm reduction, sex worker advocacy, and science journalism.</image:caption>
